What you need
You do not need a garage full of equipment. You need the right few items, kept clean, and kept separate for wheels and paint.
- Two buckets: one for wash solution, one for clean rinse water. A grit guard in the bottom of each helps keep dirt away from your mitt.
- A dedicated car shampoo. Household washing-up liquid is not made for automotive paint or rubber seals.
- A soft wash mitt or microfiber wash pad for the paint, plus a spare in case one is dropped.
- A wheel cleaner and separate wheel brushes, kept for wheels only.
- A hose or a pressure washer, used at a sensible distance from the paint.
- A large, clean microfiber drying towel.
- Optional: a gloss enhancer for after the wash.

Prepare: shade, cool panels, a plan
Heat is the main enemy of a careful wash. On hot panels, shampoo and wheel cleaner dry too quickly and can leave spots and residue that are hard to remove.
Choose shade or an overcast moment, and let the car stand for a while after driving so the bonnet, brakes and wheels can cool down. Lay out everything you need before you begin so nothing dries while you search for a towel.

Wheels first, with separate tools
Wheels and tyres are usually the dirtiest part of the car. Clean them first, so splashes of brake dust do not land on panels you have already washed.
Rinse
Rinse one wheel and the arch to remove loose dirt.
Apply
Spray wheel cleaner on a cool wheel. For the HOCUS wheel cleaner the listing gives a dwell time of 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing. Do not let it dry.
Agitate
Work the faces, spokes and barrel with a soft wheel brush. Use a separate stiffer brush for the tyre wall.
Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the wheel, tyre and arch completely, then move on to the next wheel.

Prewash and rinse
The goal of a prewash is to remove as much grit as possible before anything touches the paint. Every grain that leaves with the water is one that cannot be dragged across the surface by your mitt.
Rinse from the top
Rinse the whole car from the roof downwards, paying attention to sills, bumpers and the lower doors.
Soak
If you use a foam or prewash product, cover the car and let it dwell for the time on its label, without letting it dry.
Rinse again
Rinse the foam away from top to bottom. Keep the nozzle at a sensible distance and take extra care around badges, trim and seals.

Gentle contact wash, top down
Now the gentle part. Fill one bucket with shampoo solution and the other with clean water. Dip the mitt in shampoo, wash a small area, then rinse the mitt in the clean bucket before you reload it.
Roof and glass
Start at the top, where the car is cleanest.
Bonnet, boot and upper sides
Wash in straight, overlapping passes with light pressure. Let the mitt and the shampoo do the work.
Lower panels last
Sills, lower doors and bumpers carry the most grit. Wash them last, and rinse the mitt more often here.
Rinse as you go
In warm or windy weather, rinse each section before it dries.

Final rinse and drying
Give the car a final rinse from top to bottom, letting the water sheet off the panels. Then dry promptly, before water spots can form.
Use a clean towel
Lay a large, clean microfiber drying towel flat on the panel and pat or draw it slowly towards you.
Do not scrub
Light pressure is enough. Turn or change the towel as it becomes wet.
Finish the details
Open the doors, boot and fuel flap, and dry the shut lines and mirrors so drips do not run down clean panels.

Optional: add gloss
A clean, dry car is the right moment to add gloss. The HOCUS body gloss enhancer is made for painted body surfaces. Apply it as described in the instructions on the bottle.
Machine polishing and long-lasting coatings are professional services rather than part of a home wash. If your paint needs more than a wash, our team can advise you.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Washing in direct sun or on hot panels.
- Using one bucket for everything, or the same mitt for wheels and paint.
- Starting with the paint and splashing it with wheel dirt afterwards.
- Scrubbing dry or dusty paint without a proper rinse first.
- Letting shampoo, foam or wheel cleaner dry on the surface.
- Using washing-up liquid instead of car shampoo.
- Drying with an old bath towel or a chamois full of grit.
Seasonal tips
- Winter: road salt and grime build up fast. Rinse the lower panels, wheel arches and sills more often, and only wash when temperatures let the car dry without water freezing in locks and seals.
- Spring: remove the winter film carefully with a thorough prewash before any contact.
- Summer: bird droppings, insects and tree sap are best removed soon. Wash early or late in the day and keep panels cool.
- Autumn: leaves and wet grit collect in drains and seals. Clear them carefully when you wash.
Quick checklist
- Car parked in shade, panels and wheels cool
- Two buckets with grit guards, shampoo ready
- Separate tools for wheels and for paint
- Wheels cleaned and rinsed first
- Full prewash and rinse before contact
- Top-down washing, mitt rinsed after every section
- Final rinse, then a prompt soft dry
- Optional gloss applied as described on the bottle
Questions and answers
How often should I wash my car?
It depends on weather and use. A useful rule is to wash before dirt starts to stick: more often in winter and during pollen or insect season, less often when the weather is dry.
Can I use washing-up liquid?
We do not recommend it. It is made for dishes, not for automotive paint, seals and trim. Use a dedicated car shampoo.
Do I really need two buckets?
Two buckets keep the dirt you rinse out of the mitt away from your clean shampoo. It is one of the simplest ways to wash more gently.
Can a pressure washer damage the car?
Used carefully, it is helpful. Keep a sensible distance, do not aim directly at damaged paint, loose trim or seals, and follow the instructions for your machine.
Is a home wash completely scratch-free?
No method can promise that. Careful preparation, a good prewash, clean tools and light pressure greatly reduce the risk.
Should I wash at home or at HOCUS?
Both work. If you have no shade, no permitted place to wash or it is freezing, the team at a HOCUS car care center can wash the car for you.
